Dust, bacteria, pathogens and dry air – it’s all connected
When winter is here again, it brings with it dry air that makes it extra demanding in many working environments. When we fire and heat our buildings, the humidity drops and the air becomes even drier. This is noticeable both on the body and in production.
Dry air and HSE
Dry air dries out mucous membranes and makes us more susceptible to bacteria and pathogens, which also thrive better when humidity levels are low. Many people experience dry eyes, sore throats, coughs, nasal congestion, worsening asthma, static electricity in clothing and a generally poorer indoor climate during the winter months.
This is no coincidence – it’s about relative humidity falling far below what is considered a healthy and stable level.

Humidification is the solution
However, it’s easy to do something about the dry air – with a humidification system!
There is no other solution that actually regulates the actual humidity in the room. Air purifiers, filter boxes and ventilation do a lot of good, but they don’t add moisture.
In order to stabilize humidity at an optimal level, you need to add moisture. Properly designed and dimensioned, a humidification system can effectively increase the humidity and keep it even throughout the year.
At Klimabefuktning, we install humidification systems in all types of work environments that struggle with challenges related to dry air.
Some of the environments we’re talking about here are: office buildings, heavy industry (concrete production, wood production, module production), print shops, theaters, car paint shops, clothing stores and many, many more.
What they all have in common is that low humidity creates specific problems with dust, static electricity, cracking in wood, shrinkage in materials, quality deviations in production, shorter machine life and/or discomfort for employees and customers.
When humidity stabilizes at a controlled level, typically around 40-50%, several things happen simultaneously:
- Suspended matter / dust / quartz dust binds more easily and falls down faster.
- Static electricity is significantly reduced.
- Materials hold their shape and tension better.
→ In production environments, this means more stable processes and less waste.
→ In office environments, it means a more comfortable working environment.
The dust produced in a workplace is more likely to stay where it is created when the humidity is right. Humidity acts as an invisible blanket in the air, which means that the finest particles do not float as long and spread throughout the room.
This meansless deposits on machines, less strain on ventilation systems and less exposure for employees.

Dust filter vs Humidification
Dust filter boxes, which are widespread in many industries, draw air and particles through the room before they pass a filter. This means that the dust moves through the working environment first, with a higher risk of it settling on equipment, machinery and employees. Furthermore, this can also increase static electricity. Dust filters capture much of the coarse dust, but the finest and lightest particulate matter can still remain in the air over time.
In addition, such solutions draw a lot of power, make noise and require space and regular filter changes. Many people also find that high air movement combined with winter operation makes the air even drier. Read more about Dust filter vs Humidification.
Humidification works differently by changing the properties of the air itself.
When the humidity is stable, both dust dispersion and static electricity are naturally reduced. This results in more balanced air in the entire room, not just around a machine or extraction point.
The right humidity is not just about comfort. It’s about HSE, quality, longevity of materials and stable operation. :
→ In environments with wood, we see less cracking and warping.
→ In paint and surface treatment, we see more stable conditions.
→ In textile and theater environments, static electricity and dust are reduced in costumes and stage carpets.
In practice, there is only one solution that actually addresses the problem of dry air – and that is humidification!
Our systems are among the best in the world and are manufactured in Austria by Merlin Technology. The systems are designed according to water quality, air volumes and the needs of the individual location.
The aim is not just to add moisture, but to create controlled and stable humidity throughout the year. Dry air and dust are linked. If you want to do something about the root of the problem, you have to do something about the humidity.
